In this week’s Contemplative Living Podcast, we look at the first steps in our spiritual journey. Balance is so immediate, intimate, and accessible in every moment of experience. We are used to projecting our attention out into the world, and it is a noticeable shift when we face inward. Bring conscious awareness to your balance. It is generally overlooked, a vital first step in learning about ourselves. The quality of every relationship is enhanced by the care brought to it by each person. Life is a balancing act. Each of us is perched upon a precarious pole, trying to stay centered in a swaying, breezy world. Wed our discipline to joy, and find pleasure in the myriad of wonders that life offers. Take in what is offered and available without being consumed by it.
Deep Listening Inward
The first step to any journey is always the hardest. It’s even harder when that journey is inward. But that’s okay, because the hardest part of the journey is also the most rewarding. To begin, sit in a comfortable position and close your eyes. Take a few deep breaths and focus on your breath going in and out. Once you’re feeling relaxed, start to pay attention to your thoughts. Don’t judge them, just observe them. If your mind starts to wander, gently bring it back to your breath. This may seem like a simple exercise, but it’s actually very difficult. It takes practice to be able to sit with yourself and just listen to your thoughts. But it’s so worth it, because by doing this you’re taking the first steps towards self-discovery and inner peace.
Allow Circumstance To Flow Through
One of the best pieces of advice I ever received was to “allow circumstance to flow through.” This means that when something happens, good or bad, you let it happen without resistance. You don’t try to control it or fix it; you just let it be. This can be difficult to do, but it’s so important. When we resist what’s happening, we create suffering for ourselves. But when we allow circumstance to flow through, we open ourselves up to possibilities we never could have imagined.
