Be Generous With What You Have

This week’s Contemplative Living Podcast examines what it means to be generous with what you have, regardless of how little. Back when I was young and poor, I never hesitated to give away whatever I had, unafraid that the universe wouldn’t come through for me. The key to generosity is a profound feeling of gratefulness; when we recognize that what we currently have is enough, our ability to give increases exponentially. By acknowledging people in full without expecting anything in return, we open ourselves up to acts of fearless generosity seen all around us in nature – like the beauty of flowers and trees or the comforting sound of raindrops.

Generosity Begins

When it comes to giving, many people think that they don’t have enough to give. This couldn’t be further from the truth! Everyone has something that they can give, whether it’s time, money, skills, or possessions.

The best way to start being generous is by giving of your time. Volunteer for a local charity or community organization. Help a neighbor with yard work or errands. Give someone a listening ear and a shoulder to cry on. These acts of kindness will not only make the recipient feel good, but they will also make you feel good as well.

It’s also important to be generous with your finances. If you are able, donate money to causes that you care about. Even if you can’t give a lot, every little bit helps. You can also choose to support businesses that give back to their community.

Finally, don’t forget to be generous with what you have been blessed with. If you have a talent or skill, use it to bless others. Share your possessions with those in need. When you are generous with what you have, it blesses both the recipient and the giver!
