Build Lasting Happiness

A Slow, True Path

This week on the Contemplative Living Podcast, our topic is “Building Lasting Happiness.” Suffering often arises when there is confusion and ignorance. Genuine happiness can be found by incorporating qualities such as goodness, caring, truth, and wisdom into our lives. However, trying to build our happiness solely on our ego is like constructing a tower on unstable ground. A simple and direct way to increase our ability to be fully present in each moment is by letting go. As we work towards reducing suffering, happiness emerges to guide us on our spiritual journeys. It is essential that we take care of ourselves physically, emotionally, and spiritually. In my own practice, I remind myself of how fortunate I am and strive to be helpful while also releasing expectations.

Building happiness on a foundation of ego is like trying to build a tower on quicksand.

It may seem stable at first, promising heights that touch the sky with its shiny facade. But beneath the surface lies an unstable ground, ready to devour any illusions of grandeur.

Ego-driven happiness is built upon external validations and fleeting accomplishments. It thrives on comparisons, constantly seeking affirmation from others. Yet, this fragile structure crumbles when faced with adversity or criticism. Its walls are weak, unable to withstand the winds of change or self-doubt.

True and lasting happiness requires a stronger base: one rooted in authenticity and self-awareness. It demands introspection and reflection to understand our values, passions, and purpose. Instead of chasing external validation, we must cultivate an internal compass guiding us towards fulfillment.

When we build our happiness upon solid foundations such as gratitude, compassion for ourselves and others, empathy, resilience – these pillars can weather life’s storms without toppling over. They provide us with strength during difficult times while allowing us to celebrate moments of joy without relying solely on outside approval.

Happiness comes to us to fuel our spiritual paths as we work to reduce suffering.

Happiness is not a destination; it’s a companion on our spiritual journey. It comes to us like a gentle breeze, whispering words of encouragement and inspiration as we navigate life’s challenges. Picture it as the fuel that powers our souls, propelling us forward on our quest to alleviate suffering in ourselves and others.

When happiness graces our lives, it fills us with warmth and vitality. It ignites an inner fire that compels us to seek out ways to bring joy and relief into the world around us. This isn’t just about fleeting moments of pleasure or temporary highs; it’s about creating lasting ripples of positive change.

By nurturing happiness within ourselves, we cultivate a deep sense of compassion for those who are suffering. We recognize that everyone is fighting their own battles, striving for peace amidst chaos. And so, fueled by the gift of happiness, we embark on the path towards reducing suffering – one smile at a time.

But let’s remember: this isn’t an easy journey. The road may be winding and filled with obstacles along the way. Yet despite any hardships encountered, happiness remains steadfast in its commitment to guide us through dark times.
