Correcting Mistakes Using Our Spiritual Practice

This week’s Contemplative Living Podcast encourages us to look at our faults and mistakes as an opportunity for growth. Being unaware of our errors is the biggest misstep we can take. By rediscovering the present moment, we can return to a place without inadequacies. By investigating within to recognize why we may be troubled and disconnected, we can begin to address our dissatisfaction. Once accepted, our blunders become a platform on which to create positive change in our lives. Looking at missteps with compassion helps us let go of any guilt or shame that comes with them, providing us with the space to forgive ourselves.

Be Gentle and Compassionate

When we are kind and compassionate to ourselves, we open up the possibility for real transformation. We can let go of judgment and criticism, and embrace a more loving attitude.

This does not mean that we ignore our mistakes – rather, we see them as an opportunity to learn and grow. If we are gentle and compassionate with ourselves, we will be more likely to extend that same kindness to others.

When we are able to see our own faults and shortcomings without judgment, we can also see the humanity in others. We can offer them compassion and understanding, instead of condemnation. When we are gentle and compassionate with ourselves, we open up the possibility for true healing – both physically and emotionally. We can create space for growth, instead of staying stuck in old patterns of behavior. We can let go of the past, and move forward into a brighter future.
