Staying Balanced In Times Of Change

In this week’s Contemplative Living Livestream, We look at how we can stay balanced in times of change. Change and uncertainty are constant, so staying balanced in times of change is everything. How do we deal with all this change? How do we abide the pains and joys of life — neither getting swept up in them nor turning our backs. Equanimity acts like the ballast of a ship. Although the ship is blown one way or the other by the winds of life, it neither sinks nor goes too far off-course. When we renounce the illusion of control, there comes clarity and balance. Find acceptance by examining the winding path that got us to where we are today. We cannot predict the future, so give your brain a rest. While change is hard for us to accept, treat yourself compassionately.

Equanimity

According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, equanimity is “mental or emotional stability or composure, especially under tension or strain; calmness; tranquility.” In these times of great change, it is more important than ever to find our inner equilibrium and maintain a sense of calm. With so much uncertainty in the world, it can be easy to get caught up in the chaos and lose sight of what is truly important. When we can remain balanced and at peace in the midst of change, we are better able to navigate whatever comes our way. We are able to make clear decisions and take action from a place of strength rather than fear.

So how do we stay equanimous when everything around us is in flux? Here are a few tips:1) Meditation: A regular meditation practice can help train the mind to stay present and focused in the face of adversity. 2) Breathing exercises: Taking deep, slow breaths helps to release tension and promote relaxation. 3) Get out in nature: Spend time in nature and connect with the incredible stillness that lies beneath the surface of all the activity. 4) Be with like-minded people: Spend time with people who support your efforts to stay calm and centered. 5) Find your anchor: Identify what brings you back to yourself when you feel lost – it could be a mantra, phrase, or saying.

Treat Yourself With Compassion and Kindness

When times are tough, it’s important to remember to treat yourself with compassion and kindness. It can be easy to forget this when you’re feeling overwhelmed or stressed, but it’s crucial to your well-being. Self-compassion involves treating yourself with the same kindness and understanding that you would offer to a good friend. It means recognizing that we all make mistakes and have difficult times, and being gentle with ourselves when we do.

Compassionate self-care means taking care of yourself in a way that meets your needs, both physically and emotionally. This might involve getting enough sleep, eating healthy foods, exercising, spending time in nature, or doing something that brings you joy. It’s also important to forgive yourself when you make mistakes or fall short of your goals. We all stumble sometimes; the important thing is to get back up and keep going. By showing compassion and kindness to yourself, you will not only improve your own wellbeing, but also set an example for others. When we are kind to ourselves, we can be kinder to those around us.
